Street Retreats are a unique offering rising from the Zen Peacemakers’ Three Tenets. When you join a Zen Peacemakers’ Street Retreat, you enter a unique opportunity to experience interdependence, now available in many locations around the world. Trained leaders support you and others in living on the streets for one, two or more days and nights, experiencing first hand the challenges of needs, the bounty of generosity and the unexpected ways they appear. Every moment is an opportunity to raise the Three Tenets – Not Knowing, Bearing Witness and Taking Action through meditating together, sharing in council, going on begging rounds, walking across town, checking in at a local soup kitchen etc. . STREET RETREAT LEADERSHIP . Zen Peacemakers Street Retreats are led by authorized, empowered street retreat leaders. Those in this group now include Bernie Glassman, Montague, MA, Eve Marko, Montague, MA, Genro Gauntt Bronx, NY, Fleet Maull, Cranston RI, Frank De Waele, Gent, Belgium, Paco Genkoji Lugovino, Bronx, NY, Michel Dubois, Montreill, France, Jim Bastien, VT, Jurgen Jian Lembke, Switzerland, Jorge Koho Mello Switzerland, Jesse Jiryu Davis, New York and Brian Joshin Byrnes, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Some teachers in our lineage have also led or co-led retreats such as Enkyo Ohara and Egyoku Nakao – both with Genro. Training is an absolute must and recognition as a leader is not guaranteed. The leader has to hold the space immaculately, strongly, softly and unrecognizably while not teaching and letting the streets be the teacher. Being deeply trained in council is an absolute must. The Zen Peacemakers are returning for the 22nd year to the old site of the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oświęcim, Poland, for a Bearing Witness Retreat. Bernie Glassman began the annual Bearing Witness Retreats in 1996, with help from Eve Marko and Andrzej Krajewski. They have taken place annually every year since then. Much has been written about these annual retreats; at least half a dozen films have been made about them in various languages. They are multi-faith and multinational in character, with a strong focus on the Zen Peacemakers’ Three Tenets: Not-Knowing, Bearing Witness, and Taking Action. We will spend most of each day is spent sitting by the train tracks at Birkenau, both in silence and in chanting the names of the dead. We will walk through the vast camps, performs vigils and memorial services inside the women’s, men’s and children’s barracks. Participants meet daily in small Council groups designed to create a safe place for people to share their inner experiences. The whole group meets in the evenings for various programs to continue bear witness to oneness in diversity. 10553876_890291711011450_5568279450286940013_o iris 404619_133959396723221_508094753_n 1654888_890293597677928_2631826398672677512_o file_007 img_9121 img_9161 img_8828 img_9031 img_9111 img_8802 img_8804 img_8834 img_8839 img_8853 img_8913 img_9053 MORE TESTIMONIALS Read the impressions of more than seventy retreat participants of the past twenty years in the book “AschePerlen – Pearls of Ash & Awe” (English & German language) at https://www.janando.de/steinrich/en WAYS TO PAY YOUR TUITION Paypal – Click ‘Add to Cart’ at the button at the top of the page and follow the instructions. Following the success of the 2015 Zen Peacemakers Black Hills Bearing Witness retreat, Zen Peacemakers supported the donation of hundreds of pounds of winter clothes to Pine Ridge Reservation. This summer, twenty-five participants visited Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation, helped built homes for Lakota residents, dipped in the river with the children, visited the local youth center, met community organizers in La Plant and the village of Badger, and were welcomed by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred Calf Woman Pipe. “We had the honor of working on a house that will be the home of a local man. The conversations, the companionship of the people from Simply Smiles, a chance to talk with the future-owner of the home and get his perspective on the Res, and the satisfaction of contributing to such a worthwhile project filled our hearts.” — Plunge Participant Nearly two dozen Zen Peacemakers have attended Oceti Sakowin Camp at Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to bear witness to the historic stand of the indigenous Nations of Turtle Island against the DAPL pipeline. Bernie would like to personally thank all of you who have supported him with donations, gifts and prayers since his stroke on January 12th, 2016. He is now at his home in Montague Massachusetts, USA. He exercises daily and attends Feldenkrais sessions with a personal trainer. These donations will help support his treatments, house-alterations and the salary of a personal caregiver, who monitors his exercising, travels with him to his appointments and helps around the house. We are gathering funds for a $14,000 treatment developed by world-renowned neuroscientist Edward Taub at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Taub Therapy Clinic. Bernie has undergone one such treatment in October 2016 concentrating on his right leg. This treatment was instrumental in helping him travel and participate in the 2016 Zen Peacemakers Auschwitz-Birkenau Bearing Witness Retreat. This next 2-week treatment will concentrate on his right arm, and this amount will cover the treatment, his travel and compensation for an accompanying caregiver.
We thank all those who have contributed in the past and encourage all those who can contribute towards this next phase to do so again.
All donations towards Bernie’s Recovery Fund (as well as all donations towards Bernie’s Recovery Fund in the past) have been and will be used solely towards his support and not towards any other Zen Peacemakers Inc. projects.
