Since the 1980s, the US has been the leader in mass incarceration making up approximately 25% of the world’s prison population though its population is only 4-5% of the world. Harsh long sentences from our criminal justice system have kept more than 2 million bodies inside the prisons costing taxpayers more than $80 billion per year. Yet 83% of formerly incarcerated people (FIP), or Returning Citizens, return to prisons within 9 years, most of them suffering from PTSD from before incarceration, whose symptoms are often made worse by life inside prison.
