Can Hula practice be Zen practice? What is Zen practice and what is Hula practice? Roshi June has been exploring/practicing these two disciplines for the past 30 years. They are both part of who she is. The Hawaiian cultural practice of Hula is deeply spiritual, and nature based. It tells a story about a place, a person, or an experience through dance. For Roshi June, Zazen practice deepens hula practice by learning to open to the stories we tell ourselves and then letting them go. Attention and gentleness are critical to both practices as a way to cultivate love, compassion, aloha for self and all things.
