ZPI Short - What a “Buddhist politics” might look like in the post Trump United States
- Zen Peacemakers International
- Subject: Peacemaker Short
The full presentation explores the author’s vision of what a “Buddhist politics” might look like in the USA in the 21st century. It begins with the effort to understand the Buddha’s teachings in light of the social, economic, political, and religious environment of his day before moving on to his comments on society, politics, and leadership. We will then quickly review some of the contemporary writings from a variety of prominent “engaged Buddhist” writers and teachers—all in an effort to outline a set of political principles for 21st-century American politics. Finally, we will explore a “Buddhist response” to the Trump Presidency as we envision a new political paradigm based on love and compassion in the years to come. PRESENTER: Tom Daijo Redden, Ph.D., ZPO priest, chaplain, and political scientist. Tom has taught political science at the college level for the past 30 years.
