Awakening At Home
What is your organization’s name?
Awakening At Home.
What is your mission?
Awakening at home is dedicated to supporting spiritual growth through meditation and other practices. While we are grounded in Buddhist thought and practice, we honor and draw on all Wisdom traditions to further an awakening life.
Where is your organization based?
Online and Sonoma, California.
How many regular members do you serve? 30
Tell us a bit about how the group was conceived?
After 3 years of intensive Buddhist practice and study, I became a mother, applied the teachings and practices, and noticed that mothers are an underserved group where the practices and teachings can flower.
Tell us about one exciting project, retreat, or other offerings that you are currently working on.
Translating the practices and teachings (especially for mothers) via zoom meditation, a monthly blog, and intermittent workshops on topics such as Basics of Buddhism, the 3 refuges, setting up a home sitting practice, fundamentals of meditation, Gatha writing workshop, and many other online offerings through the Hearth Foundation that support in-home practice, including home-based meditation support.
How do the Three Tenets inform your social engagement?
All of my compassionate action comes out of not knowing and bearing witness. One example is when I was in Burma I opened to not knowing what I would learn there. I knew nothing about what was going on in Burma and just absorbed it. I bore witness to the disrespect of a mother and her hungry child as the food was heaped upon a Buddha statue. that witnessing has informed my service to this day.
What is the most meaningful challenge your organization faces?
Making the work a source of support rather than another thing on the to-do list for mothers. also the challenge of connecting with those who would benefit from this work.
