Tell us a bit about how the group was conceived?
Our group was conceived through our intersection of Zen Buddhist studies and decades of personal dream work. Realizing the immense power of this combination, we have developed a concise practice to bring to fruition a guided methodology to benefit the sangha, all Buddhist practitioners, and society at large.
Tell us about one exciting project, program, retreat, or other offerings you are currently working on?
We are currently involved in offering a workshop through ZPI on dream consciousness from a Buddhist perspective. We will be presenting our work at the 39th Annual International Dream (IASD) symposium in Tucson in July. To learn more, CLICK HERE.
How do the Three Tenets inform your social engagement? Best to include a specific story or anecdote to illustrate.
The three tenets are in constant interplay with the noble eightfold path, which once engaged is always social engagement. The first on the eightfold path is the “right view.” An aspect of the right view is that no-self naturally flows into the jewel of the sangha. We engage in dream koan practice as a sangha activity. This practice of supporting each other in exploring dream consciousness is social engagement and flows into every other activity.
What is the most meaningful challenge your organization faces?
Transforming these natural dream images into purposeful actions. Just as with Zen meditation, as one’s embodiment increases, so too does a clear path of compassionate action arises. Our greatest challenge is integration with the community in which the practitioner is involved.

Main contact’s info:
Tom Zenho Whalen, Sensei, and Rick Issan Mugai Elkin, Sensei: eighthwavecommunity@gmail.com.
Tom Zenho Whalen, Sensei, received Dharma transmission from Jitsudo Ancheta Rōshi in the lineage of Taizan Maezumi Rōshi, founder of the White Plum Asanga, and Bernie Tetsugen Glassman Rōshi. He remains a student and practitioner of Archetypal Dream Yoga for 30+ years. He is also an MD, versed in many aspects of neuroscience, for the alleviation of the suffering of pain and addiction. He receives direct teachings from many ancestors during dream consciousness. “Somehow during the transmission of Buddhism from Asia to North America, we seem to have misplaced the vital importance of Dream consciousness for our lineage practice. I hope to rekindle devotion to this aspect of our shared practice.”~Zenho.
Rick Issan Mugai Elkin, Sensei, received Denkai from Zenho Whalen and Dharma transmission from Jitsudo Ancheta Rōshi. Issan has a background in Jungian dream-work, in conjunction with traditional Zen practice. “The key to the wholeness we all seek is through the experience of deep authenticity, which can be realized through the application of dreams-as-kōan.”~Issan.

I would like to participate in the workshop in Tuscon at the dream conference. Will there be a single day that is taking place? And do you know the dates.
I’m a long time student of Shodo Harada Roshi living in Santa Fe. I’d also be interested in your group in Albuquerque.
I could share a dream as s further introduction.🤗
Thank you so much, a dear friend just connected me from Seattle.
This is like a dream answering a dream! So gratefully, Shingen
